Student Project:Yes - Screen & Film School Birmingham
I see Film as a universal language. I aspire to be a master of that language. I, Luke Lawrence, am an aspiring filmmaker and a recently graduated student at Screen & Film School: Birmingham - although film school isn't everything and I mainly went to get my hands on kit and meet other filmmakers!
Since 2017, at the age of 14, I became enamoured with film since being emotionally moved by films like Casino Royale and enlightened by the power film had to depict complex ideas in the work of Stanley Kubrick, and others following him.
Coming from a lower-middle class British background, I know it won't be as easy for me to reach the level I aspire to as others - with more money. But that only makes me strive harder.
Now, at 21, I seek never to be a one trick pony, but delve into every genre and always evolve; never making the same film twice. I'm so grateful to be part of this new generation of accessible, affordable digital filmmaking and just hope for more resources, to make more and make better.
What you see in my projects is a mere glimpse of what is inside my head, and I have so much more packed away to give for the future.
Destruction tells an all too familiar story of a politician stepping too far past the line and becoming so occupied with maintaining a certain public image that it actually leads to the detriment of the people they are meant to serve.
As both national and cultural conflicts continue to rise worldwide in 2024, Destruction is a product of the existential anxieties subsequent to many stories which currently flood our news feeds. But, despite depicting a controversial leader, I set out to make a film which affirms him as human - and so he falls guilty to a human issue. This, in acknowledgement that even the most strategical, calculated leaders in real life are still susceptible to human issues.
I and the writer (Jasdeep Shoker) are both engaged in politics and so, inspired by a real conflicting tension between Canada and India in 2023, we wanted to explore not only what the consequences of a national leader exposing a dangerous secret might look like, but what may lie at the heart of the person who does that to further their image.
Our answer: Pride.
