Rodrigo Guim is a photographer, documentary filmmaker, ecologist and anthropologist, with works done with many indigenous peoples throughout Brazil. He taught several indigenous peoples on photography and documentary production. He holds a PhD in Communication from University of Sâo Paulo, through the Audiovisual Media and Processes program. He also studied cinema at USA schools such as San Francisco City College, and in Brazil at Academia Internacional de Cinema and Sesc, among others. He produced several short films in various fields of cinema, in the roles of photographer, editor and director. His first short film on a ritual of the Xavante people of Brazil was commercialized in VHS format in the year 2001, before the arrival of DVD for the Brazilian consumer market. He then later moved on to teach several indigenous people of Brazil on the art of photography and documentary filmmaking, producing many short videos and documentaries in collaboration and even codirection with them. In 2019 he finished his first feature documentary called IN THE NAME OF MY PEOPLE, about the history of more than 40 years of wars in Afghanistan, shot on location and featuring Malalai Joya as protagonist and Noam Chomsky among others. DAMS AMONG US is a 20-year production, and his second feature documentary film as director.
This film is the result of my experience as a professor of Tourism at Unesp Rosana. When I moved to Rosana, I became friends with Nadabi Mendes, a poet and screenwriter for the film, and Lu Fernando Neves, the producer. We started filming after a few months, but paused to gain more knowledge about Pontal do Paranapanema region and tell this complex and rich story of Brazil. After 20 years, here we are with the finished film, produced by the NGO we created for cultural and environmental actions in Rosana.
The documentary addresses the construction of the Porto Primavera Hydroelectric Dam and the city of Primavera which was constructed to house the "barrageiros (dam workers)". It takes viewers into the journey of the occupation of Pontal do Paranapanema region and the impacts on riverside dwellers, fishermen, indigenous people, dam workers and rural settlements. We narrate the transformations of Pontal and the current reality of the people who lived on the banks of the Paraná River in Mato Grosso do Sul, who suffered relocation and environmental destruction. It urges us to rethink our development models.
How to tell a story in which many were happy and had a good life in a city, while others suffered several setbacks in their lives? That was the challenge of the film.
