Custodians

Places belong to those who "inhabit" them, i.e. those who care for them and feel them essential to their identity. In Latin "habitare" means "to habitually have". Nothing to do with ownership or possession: it is building, defending, preserving. True custodians do not exhibit their work. You can recognize them by their profound knowledge of the territory in which they live and work, acquired first through the lessons of their fathers, then through careful observation, dedication, hard work: an awareness of places carved on faces and hands, reflected in voices and eyes, sculpted in memory and soul.
