Experiencing Interruptions?

Cupboard Girl

Tsuki is a teenage girl whose overprotective mother still treats her like a baby. Her comfortable existence has left Tsuki with a complete lack of social and survival skills. When her mother meets a man, Tsuki has to grow up quickly but when her mother abandons her, she takes refuge in a womb-like cupboard. Increasingly unable to distinguish reality from nightmare Tsuki’s world starts to fragment with terrifying consequences. This surreal, psychological drama was inspired by Ian McEwan's short story "Conversation with a Cupboard man".

Director Statement

Although I made a Japan-set adaption of this story, the main theme stays the same: grown-up and dependency. It is a universal subject everyone ought to tackle. Alongside the narrative, I applied surreal elements to this film as a means of questioning its reality
