"Caring between lands. Who takes care of life when women migrate?" (2019)

María works as an internal maid, takes care of an elderly person 24 hours, seven days a week, in a Spanish city; meanwhile, she also has to pay attention to her father, an old man who lives at the other end of the Atlantic sea. In Cali, Lucelly takes care of the daughter of a wealthy family, from "good morning" to the "good night" kiss, while her own children are growing up far away, in the countryside. Luz Myriam takes the overexertion of continuing to fight in defense of the Magdalena River in Colombia, now that she is displaced from the territory where she fished, and that she works as a domestic worker.
These are three stories of the tens of thousands of women that currently feed the "care drain" from Latin America to Europe and the US, and from rural territories to urban downtowns. Three of the many women that have become migrants and have been displaced, who work taking care of elderly and children, away from their home, while in their land other women fill the daily void that has been created as a consequence.
As Camila Esguerra, a Colombian researcher, analyzes, "the supposed development of the countries of the Global North has been at the expense of the exploitation of their women and the overexploitation of migrant women."
"Caring between lands" (2019) focuses on the global care chains, a transnational and urbanized phenomenon that embodies the continuation of colonial relations in the body of women from the Global South. A reflection on the role, as essential as invisible, of care in the global economy.
