Director Biography - Joseph Yates

Joseph Yates began writing & directing films at age 11 in his native Virginia. About 70 short films and one film degree later, he moved down south to Atlanta to level it up. “Cucumber” is his first film made in Georgia. As an actor, his credits include “Juanita” (on Netflix) and “Lovecraft Country” (coming soon to HBO), and on the crew side he’s worked in the casting department on “Richard Jewell” and “House of Cards.” Joseph is currently developing the feature film "Alien Parasite Bug Invasion v. State of Georgia," a satirical sci-fi about abortion, immigration, LGBTQ identity, and intergalactic assassinations.

Director Statement

I grew up in a mini-hospital. Any time I was injured or ill, my nurse mother and pharmacist father would band together to save their new patient-- me. And thus was born “Cucumber.” My style draws from the genre-based farces of Mel Brooks and Edgar Wright; I aimed to stuff this ripe movie-hole full of as many large, girthy jokes as possible.
