Director Biography - Junli Gu

Junli Gu is is an independent creator from Shanghai, China.

She grew up in the period of rapid development of the Internet after the millennium, which made her interested in new media. The busy city life with happiness gave her more room for imagination and creation. She spent her adolescence freely painting and writing, which also established her work style advocating absolute freedom and the embryonic form of disorder and chaos.

In 2018, she came to UTS to complete her undergraduate studies, during which she participated in the shooting of small documentaries. It is worth mentioning her graduation work the way to school, which is her first hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation independently designed and completed. At the same time, she also began to create more fields of her own, such as composing.

In 2022, with her ambition and interest in multi-field art creation, she came to the University of Sydney to continue studying for a new degree. Although she is inexperienced in film creation, this reason has never been a reason to hinder her action.

Director Statement

The idea of the theme of Cube was originally because I watched The Glory. The protagonist completes her revenge on the bully through his own efforts. An idea began to enter my mind: that ordinary people's lives are filled with more unfulfilled revenge than satisfying episodes of revenge. With more and more debates about women's rights, there is still no lack of questioning of women in social news in various places. I began to limit the protagonists to women who have awakened their feminine consciousness. She was pained and desensitized by her awareness of the hidden and overt harm done to women. The protagonist is not a specific person, but more like a symbolic image.

The filming process was not entirely smooth, with the scheduling of shots, the design of props and a few mood changes in between, which changed the tone of the film a little. At first I wanted to make a more direct and emotional piece, but I ended up undercutting that and making it less emotionally satisfying. However, the final film is quite satisfying because the images that I had envisaged at the beginning were basically realised.

I would like to conclude by saying that my aim was not to give the audience a sense of empathy or understanding. I'm just presenting a phenomenon in such a way that I understand it, rather than trying to get more interpretations. So I don't care what kind of comments I get, think of me as a product of my narcissism, after all I think it's a success for me to finish this project.
