Crop Swap LA
Founded by Jamiah Hargins in 2018, Crop Swap LA™ has grown from a small monthly neighborhood swap of fruits and vegetables to a globally recognized movement.
Crop Swap LA™ is on a mission to grow food on unused spaces, creating sustainable jobs and local, nutrient-rich food in communities affected most by food insecurity. In this process, they empower the members of their community and place the power of self-sufficiency back into their own hands.
They believe that food should be grown and consumed locally to reduce reliance on inefficient, water and carbon-intensive global supply chains.
Easy access to affordable, nutrient-rich food is our right, not a luxury.

I directed this film, Crop Swap LA, as a part of an initiative to highlight local non-profit organizations in the Los Angeles area. After conducting my research on the Crop Swap LA organization, I quickly felt a connection to their mission of bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to the food deserts and food-insecure neighborhoods in local Los Angeles communities. When my team and I first met with the founder and executive director, Jamiah Hargins, we made an instant connection and knew that their message and our creative vision would mesh really well. I am very grateful to the Crop Swap LA team for letting us share their story and also to my crew, for helping me realize my creative vision for this project. As a first-time director and a novice in the world of documentary filmmaking, I am very proud of how this short film turned out and I hope that audiences are compelled to look for ways that they can make a difference in their communities.
