Crooked Stick is a short screenplay competition for students at the Cinematic Arts, Zaki Gordon Center. Open to Juniors and Seniors, entrants' scripts will be up against one another as peers, and will receive valuable feedback from the alumni judging team.

Submissions are accepted via electronic submission only, between May 1, 2020 and September 15, 2020.

Entry fee for each short screenplay is $20.

The length requirements for submitted screenplays must be between 5-20 pages (excluding title page).

Judges' decisions are final.

Any genre is accepted. All scripts will be judged the same, regardless of genre.

Submitted scripts do not have to be your thesis scripts!

There is no limit to the number of short screenplays you can submit, but each must be accompanied by its own entry fee.

Payments must be made in full at time of submission and are non-refundable.

All submitted material must be your own original work, all rights owned by you. Any outside source material is not permitted at this time (ie, nothing directly based off of another work, like a play, movie, book).

A submitted project may have more than one writer. All writers must be credited on the title page. If a writing team is chosen as a winner, prizes will be awarded to the person who submits the project, and the team is responsible for sharing/dispersing prizes.

All ownership and rights to the submitted screenplays remain with you, the original rights holders.

A note on explicit content: We don’t want to read obscene amounts of gore, erotica, or profanity. We’re not going to tell you not to write that stuff, so these elements are not prohibited. However, the judges may deem a screenplay to be too excessive in any of those areas, and can disqualify it for lack of creativity, gratuitousness, or relying on shock value.

Writers must be currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in the Cinematic Arts, Zaki Gordon Center.*

Rising Juniors are not permitted entry.

Material must be submitted in English.

There are no requirements as to when the material was written.

Screenplays must be submitted in standard screenplay format, submitted electronically as a PDF.

Produced screenplays are allowed. This includes Thesis projects and Cycle project scripts!

If you need clarification or have a specific question about rules or your screenplay's eligibility, please visit the FAQ page, or CONTACT the coordinator before you submit.
