Crimson Eyes

Around 4,000 people sleep rough in London every night. That’s 4,000 sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mums and dads – all people with problems, worries, hopes, dreams and responsibilities – just like us.

“Crimson Eyes” is a monologue, looking through the eyes of Phoebe, a young female living on the street – and refers to the vacant, distant stare of rough sleepers, looking through a mist of despondency.

The purpose of the screenplay is to challenge many people’s misconceptions and stereotypical views about rough sleepers – and to explain that anyone can become homeless, given the wrong set of circumstances.

The challenge for the Director is to produce a hard-hitting, socially important monologue screenplay in a creative and engaging way.

Writer Biography - Alan Hall

Alan has come to creative writing late in life - following his early retirement from a long career in local government. His career in social housing, as Director of Housing and Communities for an Essex local authority and a Board Member of a large London-based Housing association, has informed many of his plays.

His first short theatre play, Sunny Side Up, was based in a B&B hotel and challenged people’s misconceptions and stereotypical views about homeless people living in temporary accommodation. It was very successful and selected for production by five theatre companies in London and the South East, including the Etcetera Theatre, Camden (Falling Pennies Theatre Company), Bread and Roses Theatre, Clapham (New Dreams Theatre Company), Putney Theatre (Putney Theatre Company), South Mills Arts Centre, Bishops Stortford (Contexture Theatre Company) and Steyning, near Brighton (Steyning Theatre Trail, Steyning Arts Festival).
