My aunt was a lesbian feminist. As a baby I sat in her lap during the first gay pride parade in Sacramento. I love that it happened. I hate that I can't remember it.
I grew up, only to discover I had serious feminist tendencies. My beliefs toward equality were basically spoon fed to me since birth, so my attitude wasn't conducive to being treated like a second-hand citizen. And that's when I truly understood how my aunt had to not only hide who she was from society, she had to compromise every part of herself. Fortunately, she refused. And here I am.
When I read Creme Brulee, I instantly felt connected to the plight of our clay-footed hero. Because I understood the backstory, and recognized the serious issue it touches upon, I knew this was a story I could tell with humor, lightness and love because the story is really about the human struggle of embracing our vulnerable selves in the pursuit of finding love and companionship.
No matter who we are, we all want to find that somebody who allows us to be fully ourselves and loves us despite it. What we lost as children, we seek as adults. My goal as the director was simply to tell an entertaining story that would make the audience laugh, and hopefully, forgive themselves for being imperfect human beings.
