Crafting Roots
Can handicrafts serve as a means for both exploring and reinforcing identity? Is craftsmanship intertwined with the path of self-discovery?
Enter the realm of Crafting Roots, a project dedicated to unravelling the potential of handicrafts in shaping and reaffirming identity. Nestled in the vibrant heart of Jaipur lies Avaz's Lac Bangle Making workshop, where generations of tradition and innovation collide. Here, he moulds molten lac into exquisite trinkets and bangles, each a testament to his rich heritage and boundless creativity.
For this project, Avaz was engaged in the creation of 50 beads, each adorned with a unique design. This became a canvas for his innermost thoughts and visions to unfold. This endeavour was not just about crafting objects; it was a journey of self-exploration and expression. Through this process, we witnessed his unwavering passion for innovation and his dedication to passing on his craft to the next generation, ensuring the preservation of this cherished tradition💫

I am Mahima Sethi, an accessory designer and craft researcher passionate about exploring the intersection of traditional crafts, identity, and self-expression. My work focuses on bridging heritage with contemporary design, aiming to preserve cultural traditions while fostering innovation.
As the director of Crafting Roots, I had the privilege of documenting the artistry of Avaz, a master lac bangle maker in Jaipur. Through his creation of 50 unique beads, I explored how craftsmanship serves as a profound medium for self-discovery and cultural affirmation.
This project reflects my dedication to celebrating the resilience of artisans and advocating for the preservation and evolution of traditional crafts. I strive to inspire action toward sustaining these invaluable cultural legacies for future generations.
