Crab C/Sella/er
Crab C/S e l l a/e r plays a bit like flipping through the channels on a television, seeking experience without a planned destination. Pastors, segways, computer crashes, and carjackings are compressed into a dizzying mosaic.
By repeating the simple routine of inputting random combinations of text and numbers into YouTube’s search engine, we have collected a significant database of unique footage. The result is a kind of digital archaeology where videos, unseen and buried beneath the ceaseless flow of internet content, are uncovered and examined.
Functioning similarly to artistic processes like automatic drawing or writing, we’ve characterized a practice of stockpiling “automatic experiences”. Now, a selection of these pieces– some musical, others visceral, sublime, or comedic– has been married to result in a single complete work, one interested in themes only revealed as the videos play in the context of one another.

Andrew Boynton (b.1999) uses the photographic tableaux to investigate the conflicts that afflict our heavily polarized contemporary moment. His interdisciplinary practice is informed by the 18th-century aristocracy and their indulgent lifestyles.
His work is in multiple private and public collections, including the Joan Flasch Artist Book Collection. In 2022 Boynton was awarded Chicago’s Luminarts Fellowship. Boynton’s work has been shown at MANA Contemporary as well as the Research House for Asian Art. He works out of Chicago where he received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute.
