Country of Thousand Ponds – Part I Start

In Taoyuan of Taiwan,
there are more than 8,000 ponds at most
in about 600 square kilometers region,
which makes the richest land of fish and rice in northern Taiwan.
Millions of people depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
However, with the rapid disappearance of native fish by commercial farming
and the destruction of urban development,
the area of ponds has shrunk to only 20%.
Many people worry that the 300-year-old Pond Culture in Taoyuan will
disappear completely in this century.
Since 2022, Taiwan Native Fish Conservation Association, in conjunction with local farms in Yangmei,
has tried to restore the disappearing pond ecology
and cooperated with Taoyuan Municipal Yangmei Senior High School
to pass on environmental education to local students through the restoration process.
It all started with the first three small pools.
Production, ecology and life are the three main axes of sustainable management of Taiwan farms in the future.
We have recorded the restoration process completely.
Although we encountered many difficulties,
including the fact that exotic species destroyed all the aquatic plants at first,
we tried to replant them.
We believe that after defeating the exotic species,
we will successfully find the native species in ponds,
which is a start.
