Director Statement

Cost of Compassion is a short film in which an upper-class businessman is forced to share the same space as a homeless man for a few minutes. Raised in South Los Angeles, I have observed homelessness for the entirety of my life. In the streets, on the bus, under the freeway, etc. The unfortunate reality is that high levels of homelessness has become normalized in parts of the city, particularly communities of color. As a result, homeless people are scattered all over the city but, in large, they are ignored. Cost of Compassion shines light on the country’s praise of an individualistic mindset that highlights privacy and minimizes community. Thereby, minimizing the sense of compassion overall. Through this dynamic, I aim to comment on the grander structure of the human experience in America while also drawing attention to the homeless epidemic that is plagues major cities in America, such as Los Angeles.
