Coral Reef Restoration
In my short life of 16 years, climate change, declining water quality, overfishing, pollution, and unsustainable coastal development have decimated up to 15% of the world’s coral reefs. In my short film “Coral Reef Restoration,” I demonstrate four simple steps to do something about it.

Asa Miller is a junior at Edgemont Jr./Sr. High School in Scarsdale, New York. He is a coral reef restoration specialist, diver, and filmmaker of international renown, particularly for his work and research in his homeland Cuba. Asa studies piano at the Hoff-Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale under Maxim Pakhomov of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, and has performed at venues around the world. Asa plays lacrosse year-round, starting at midfield for his high school’s varsity team, his club team True Lacrosse Westchester, and Israel’s U18 national team. In 2023, Asa was appointed the first Youth Poet Laureate of Greenburgh, New York. He has a Bluetick Coonhound named Luna and a Southern painted turtle named Turtle.
The ocean is important to me because I am Cuban. Cuba is surrounded by ocean, so it dictates much of my family’s culture and lifestyle. With less industrial waste and stronger marine protections than most countries, Cuba is also home to some of the best-preserved coral reefs in the world. I live in New York, but have been conducting scientific research in Cuba about how they maintain their coral reefs, and how I can help them to do so. To prepare for my work there, I have taken courses, received certifications, and practiced coral reef restoration. My short film “Coral Reef Restoration” showcases some of my training.
