Cooties is a NYC-based feminist zine that showcases femme and female-identifying creators from all over the world. Our platform, online and in-print, creates a space for these artists to showcase their work. Although our focus has mainly been on photography and written works, we are extending our reach more explicitly to include film and video art.

The Cooties Zine Festival welcomes films from professionals, students, and community members locally, nationally, and internationally. Our ambition is to highlight stories told or created by women and/or pertain to feminist discourse.

We are a short film festival and all films must be less than 18 minutes. There is no minimum length.

Rules & Terms

Our terms and conditions apply:

-Films must be either directed, produced, or written by a woman or female-identifying person, or have relevance to feminism and feminist discourse.
- All films must be less than 18 minutes and there is not minimum length.
- We accept films from any genre.
- Year of completion does not matter, we accept films from any year as long as relevant to the festival.
- There is no premiere status necessary.
- The submitter must be entitled to submit the film and the legal rights to screen it.
- Submission does not guarantee acceptance, the Cooties Zine Team will select the films for the festival and the submitter will be notified if the film has been accepted. Please note that we do not have the capacity to contact all filmmakers personally. We will send out notifications to selected filmmakers via FilmFreeway and reply to non-selected filmmakers if we have the capacity to do so.
- We do not return any material sent to us.
- The submission fee is non-refundable.
- By submitting a film the filmmakers, copyright owners, and distribution rights owners agree to have the film screened if selected for the program. We might also re-screen films for future short film programs curated by Cooties Zine.
- We reserve the right to use the stills and images for our promotional material such as the website, our program or our press releases with no further mention of photo credit.
- All submissions must be made digitally and we will not accept DVDs, DCPS, etc.
- Shipping costs / digital transfer / entry costs have to be paid by the filmmaker.

    I'm so glad to have been honored with the Cooties Best Short award with my short film Siempre Dani. I know that this festival is going to have a very long life because of what the creators stand for and the support they're giving to women in the film industry.
