Concerning Violence
The Philippines is no stranger to repression. The Filipino people have endured and fought through colonial powers and dictatorships. Today, this repression has been intensified through sheer and brutal violence. When the democratic space has been constricted to the point of superficiality and the fascist state has monopolised all forms of violence, the oppressed are left with no choice but to wage resistance by all means necessary, even if that means utilising violence itself.

Geril Lumawig was born in the province of Pampanga in the Philippines on the 17th of June, 2001. He immigrated to Australia in 2012 and is actively involved with various community organisations , supporting the people’s struggle for national democracy in the Philippines and issues confronting the international community. His films often deal with the memory of resistance and the dialectical relationship with the past and present especially in the context of Philippine society and the forces that seek to change it.
Concerning Violence was shot and edited with an IPhone 8. The short film deals with the repressive measures taken by the Philippine state against dissent which includes the rampant killings of peasants and activists aswell as the arrests made against progressive artists who paint the country’s walls with the demands of the people. When the state is not killing its people directly, it also killing them through neo-liberal policies, affecting the poorest of the poorest the most.
