Nicola Hawkins transitioned from choreography for the stage to film in 2019. She writes and directs short art films whose fictional narratives often develop in response to a piece of music and are inspired by the high drama of the early silent movies. Nicola also makes short observational documentaries featuring rural life in a Newfoundland outport where she lives.
To date Nicola has created 5 music videos, 2 short docs and 3 short dramas. Her work has been screened at over 37 film festivals in Canada and internationally. Her films have won four awards, one has screened on CBC Gem and another on Arts Film, Montreal. Most of her films have been made with generous support from ArtsNL (Newfoundland Provincial Art funding) and Canada Council for the Arts.
This is my first comic satire and first film with dialogue. It is a commentary on class, art and heritage. It was made as part of the First Time Filmaker program organized by Newfoundland Independent Film COOP, almost exclusively with volunteers.
