Tony (Anthony) Power, who was born in Waterford/Ireland, studied Art and Design. After he had worked as a graphic designer and illustrator, he started his career in the animation film sector at the Murakami Wolf Studios in Dublin. He worked for the production of the first episodes of the American TV-series “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (1983/84). After that he became a member of Hahn Film in Berlin and worked on, among other things, the TV-series “Bibi Blocksberg” (1996). In the feature film “The Abrafaxe - Under The Black Flag” (2001), Power operated as director and supervised the whole animation work. Besides that Power was the director of “Urmel” (1996-97), “Renaade” (1997), “Mia and Me – Adventure In Centopia” (2011) and “School For Vampires” (2006-08), which he also wrote. His other writing credits include “Rusty Knight“ (2013, TV-series), “Sherazade: The Untold Stories“ (2013) and “Coconut The Little Dragon“ (2015, TV-series).
What is the film about and why is it a special one?
The main theme of the film is Friendship. Sometimes conflicts exist between even the closest of friends, and it’s only through understanding and accepting each other’s differences that we can overcome these conflicts.
Coconut was ideal for this because I found the core group of Coconut, Oscar and Matilda, to be a wonderful, tight-knit group but in all their adventures I felt that their friendship hadn’t been really truly tested. That’s what I wanted to achieve with this film. Taking them out of their comfort zone into a brand-new land was the perfect setting for this, allowing us to bring in new characters and also new threats.
The young water-dragon, Wart drives a wedge between Coconut and Oscar, mainly due to Oscar's jealousy of the attention Coconut is paying to Wart. However like all things, it’s not all one sided. Coconut, fascinated by this strange new dragon, unintentionally neglects Oscar. It’s a simple oversight that has much bigger consequences. Situations like this were important for me to bring to the forefront and show how our characters deal with those, albeit in a humorous way.
Beyond the theme of friendships…
The second theme of the film is dealing with the new and unfamiliar - For the kids, travelling to the Summer Camp is a huge adventure and although some of the kids rally against the water dragons, our heroes are more open minded and curious about this new species. The adults however are more reluctant to accept the water dragons, seeing them as pests and eventually, a threat. It's only when they are confronted by a real menace that they realize that they have a lot more in common than they believed.
What was important for you during the development process?
It was important for me to always remember Coconut’s fan base and stay true to all that had gone before, but also to add elements here and there that older kids and adults could enjoy.
At the end of the day, we're making entertainment, and I wanted to make a film that entertained to young and old alike. Our producers Gabi and Marcus, were very hands on, helping me in that goal. Hearing the laughs and cheers, (and sometime shouts), during cinema viewings makes me believe that we achieved just that.
