Close Quarters

Manuel and Lupe want to have a baby. When Manuel discovers he is infertile, he starts to fall apart both physically and emotionally. After exploring several options, Manuel turns to Rubén, his new friend, to act as their donor. In return, Rubén asks to stay for a few days at Manuel and Lupe’s, promising to leave soon for the States. His presence will change everything, and Manuel’s dream of being a father will end in his own exile.

Director Biography - Andrés Clariond Rangel

Andres Clariond was born in Monterrey, México. He studied an MFA in film at Columbia University in New York. After finishing his master´s degree, he began working on his first feature film, Hilda, based on a play written by the french author Marie N´Diaye. Andres’ first film was nominated for five Arieles (Mexican Academy Awards) and won the Ariel for Best Female Support. It was released commercially in Mexico with great success amongst crticis, and was sold in the US and Europe. After completing his second feature, Close Quarters, Andres began working on The Book of Hours, a documentary about Alfonso Cuarón’s creative process while shooting his Academy Award winning film, Roma.

Director Statement

Close Quarters explores two themes related to masculinity: paternity and power. I grew up in a society in which machismo, animosity and violence was normalized. In a time in which it is essential to question gender roles, this film explores, confronts and breaks apart man’s darkest insecurities and vices.
