At the request of the United States Canada arrested Huaxing CFO Feng Xiaozhouon Dec 1, 2018, since then, an unprecedented game of politics is playing out among the three countries, and it has triggered a serious international crisis for Canada.
Canada-China relations have also fallen to the lowest point since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Already, China has apparently retaliated for Feng’s arrest by detaining three Canadians, and even re-sentencing a Canadian found guilty of drug smuggling in China to death. On the other side, the United States also sued Huaxing for 23 counts and formally requested Canada to extradite Feng Xiaozhou. Now Canada is caught between two super powers, and found itself trapped into an embarrassing situation. The independence and impartiality of the legislation in Canada is also facing a test.
To make things even more dramatically, the Canadian ambassador to China was disclosed by Canadian journalists for making two times inappropriate comments about the extradition of Feng Xiaozhou, which ignited a firestorm of controversy in the Canadian society, and finally was fired from his job. On the other hand, the CCP’s ambassador has publicly threatened Canada not to reject Huaxing’s participation in Canada’s 5G project; otherwise there will be serious consequences - but this has the opposite effect, forcing Canada to abandon Huaxing.
However, this is just the beginning of the "diplomatic war" and the "cloud technology (C Tech) war" around Huaxing. The Princess of Huaxing, who was released on bail and lived in her Vancouver mansion, became a hot potato for Canada to juggle.
