The Grindylow - City of Cranes

This Mini-Documentary was shot in October 2017 and features the Seattle band The Grindylow. The idea behind the mini-tour was to travel to different neighborhoods around Seattle, showcasing the band and supporting artists. It was also a great way to feature some awesome venues in Seattle while they are still around.

The City of Cranes, as one of the Grindylow's songs, and as a concept, deals with the staggering growth Seattle is experiencing. At the height of the building spree, there were about 70 construction cranes visible in Seattle, most of them building high-end commercial and residential buildings. With the growth of the tech industry in Seattle, real-estate and rent has become very expensive, displacing people who don't have high-paying tech jobs, including artists, musicians, performers, and other people essential for a vibrant urban culture.

Director Biography - Marcell Marias

I'm an artist working with light, video, music, sound and sculpture in order to produce unique objects and experiences. My range of videos include experimental, documentary, music video, installation, and interactive.

I care about environmental, social, cultural and political issues. My short documentary, From Fryer to Fuel - The Story of General Biodiesel, sheds light on the biofuel sourcing and production process. It also reminds us that we can fuel our cars with locally-produced fuel, instead of relying on big oil.

I'm adept at Video Projection Mapping, and I've installed/exhibited several interactive video sculptures such as the Vortexinator, Metaleyes, and the Snowflake Mapping Project.

I'm also a musician and sound designer, producing immersive electronic music in various styles. Several film and video productions feature my music and sound design.

Director Statement

I was initially asked by the band, The Grindylow, to follow them around the city of Seattle to document their very local mini tour. As we talked about the project, it became clear that there was a story beyond just the capturing of their performances.

The lead singer wrote the song "City of Cranes" to draw attention to the negative effects of unbridled development. Seattle was indeed the city of cranes, where construction projects seemed to be on every other block. Then when we discovered that there was an actual realtime map of all of the cranes, and counted the dots, we realized the extent of the development.

The interview section of the movie was important in order to give further explanations of the impacts of such development. This was a great addition to the actual performances captured at all of the venues. The iconic clubs and bars were chosen purposefully by the band for their significance to the history of the Seattle music scene and because, with all of this development, may not be around much longer. I'm grateful that this movie turned out to be funny at times, sad and depressing at others, and ultimately a poignant reminder that our urban environment, just as our natural one, may not always remain the same.
