As a lifelong stutterer, director and University of Tampa student Luke Dye uses film to explore the unique ways that people communicate with one another. Since high school he has worked as a screenwriter for production companies across the country, including Unity Films and Alpha Dog Productions. A student at the University of Tampa in Tampa, Florida, Luke has directed eight short-films ranging from dark comedy to environmental documentary. In 2023, he became the first student to win Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival's Audience Choice Award for his short film "Admissions". Luke aims to continue developing his voice and sharing his perspective with people all over the world.
I made Citrus Fever as a way to explore how I felt about my intense dedication to film. I have always been a hard-worker, but since I have started directing consistently I have fallen into a semi-obsession with the work. This stems from the fear that if I do not work hard enough, or if I take too long of a break, my opportunities will dissipate. I wish to no longer be driven by creative fear.
Grind Culture, or the belief that long, hard work is the only way to succeed, has affected the way that we interact with our friends and family. We are told that there is only one path to success, and we choose to follow it blindly. My film, Citrus Fever, investigates the cost of ambition and how important a work-life balance is. I hope that the film can inspire audiences to reevaluate their priorities in life.
