Cicadas
Yuli (38) is the topila (auxiliary police) of San Pablo Begu´, a mountain community in the north of Oaxaca where the inhabitants on a rotating basis assume the responsibilities of self-government on a rotating and honorary basis (communality) along with their work and personal activities. Guarding the entrance to the town, she stops a group of machinery that is trying to enter the community to begin construction of a highway. When she notifies the town, no authority is aware of the project and the community goes on alert; they will have to decide whether or not to accept the highway project and its consequences.

Cicadas is a look at the complexity of coming to agreement in a community, a window on the inner workings of what we have called communality, a way of life that has survived for more than 500 years and that sustains, day by day, one of the oldest forests in Latin America. San Pablo Begu' does not exist but it is performed by the community of Guelatao de Juárez. More than 50 actors debut in a choral scene to discuss a community´s future and allow us to laugh, dream and fall in love with the future we want for our territory.
