Writer Statement

Chosen Family was written from my real-life coming out experiences and being a homeless gay teen statistic in Dallas because I would not conform to my family's "be straight" ultimatums. I turned my pain into the driving force behind creating safe spaces for all of the LGBTQ+ community to gather and create their own chosen families. This script is meant to create empowered change! My dream is to take the vision of the June Academy into reality by building a school dedicated to homeless LGBTQ+ youth, imagining the support for healthy growth, acceptance of individuality, and a safe haven off the harsh streets. Chosen Family is my opportunity to dream big and remove limitations for the LGBTQ+ youth and the entire community for what's possible.
