MK Kopp is a writer, producer, and actor. Her film, Slip, which she produced, co-starred, and co-wrote was named best short film semi-finalist in the Dumbo Film Festival. She released her second short film, It’s Not You, It’s Her, in May 2021. The film follows a struggling music producer who starts a side hustle as a breakup mediator for quarantined couples. It premiered on Film Shortage and was an official selection of Retrospective of Jupiter and Think Shorts. In October 2021, MK sold the film to Sony Pictures.
This short film is based on a feature film I have written. I'm so grateful to be making by directorial debut with this story!
Inspired by the dark comedy/horror films of the late 90's and early 2000's (American Psycho, Jawbreaker, Heathers), I wanted to write a script that saw a woman unleash the raw power that is so commonplace for men. Chipper explores a world in which an objectively smart, strong, attractive, privileged woman finds in her the same violent tendencies of the serial killers she and her sorority sisters study for fun. But rather than see the murder she's commiting as making her a monster, she's able to frame it as just her entering her "Villain Era" -- a pseudo-feminist way of saying this woman is about to fuck shit up.
This story dips into the ethical dilemma of revenge as justice, as well as why women love true crime and what the effects are of this craze. The slew of true crime podcasts, documentaries, TV shows, and even TikToks make it clear just how obsessed women are with it. Learning about male serial killers who brutally murder women can be oddly comforting and educational. Statistically, this is the majority of situations -- men killing women. Fabulous, right?
Our anti-hero believes that since humans have always sought equality when it comes to justice, it's not an escalation of violence, but rather just an "eye for an eye." Anger is objectively a normal reaction to being wronged, and if a victim needs the same wrongdoing to be committed on the perpetrator, then they should be allowed that justice.
