Director Statement

This story began with a simple premise, “What if upon arriving at the Emerald City, Dorothy was denied entry by border control?”

We often miss the adventures and hardships of the people who risk everything at a chance of relieving suffering for themselves and their family. This film aims to tell one of those stories in a Sci-FI Fantasy world.

One of my favorite parts of filmmaking is world building, we spent a lot of time considering the world of Chronos and wanted it to feel alive and real the best we could with the limited resources available to us. Visual inspirations for the film were taken a lot from Ghibli and Kurosawa. I wanted Nikita, our main character, to look like if drawn she would fit right into a Ghibli animation.

This film was part-funded by our local city council on the basis that we would involve as many creatives in our city as possible across many disciplines. We had over 50 volunteers get involved, each and every one of them passionate about telling this story and sharing this world.

After only receiving a fraction of the budget we were looking for I had to complete the over 60 VFX shots personally whenever I had the time.

Our goal as filmmakers is to make the audience feel something, I hope when watching this short the viewers can sense the love and care that went into every bit of it.
