Chhau

Chhau explores the story of menstruation practices called chhaupadi/chhau in Nepal, an observational documentary film focusing on two women who have been following Chhaupadi (menstrual practice). Chhaupadi where women must isolate themselves during the menstruation period from taking part in daily activities such as preparing meals for the family, consuming dairy products and visiting sacred places. Geeta and Devi have been following Chhaupadi practices when they experienced their first monthly cycle and expressed their views on practice.

Director Biography - Saja Sunuwar

Saja Sunuwar is from Nepal, and moved to the United States in 2021 in pursuit of a graduate program. She graduated from University of North Texas in major documentary production and studies. She is fascinated by the people’s true story and events about their life and loves to produce documentary films related to interesting and diverse human stories. Chhau is her graduate thesis film produced in Nepal.
