Director Biography - Laura Reis

Graduated in 2023 as a Filmmaker from the "Academia Internacional de Cinema" (AIC), Laura Reis already has a name recognized in the independent student film scene in São Paulo, Brazil. A pioneer in the “pink horror film” genre with her short film “Cherry on Top (2024)”, Laura caught the attention of two international magazines that invited her to talk about her film: MOYE Magazine, South Africa and Etheral Magazine, Ireland. With the same film, the filmmaker had a very high reach on social media, reaching almost 1M views on her videos promoting the project. She also worked on advertising movie sets for the brands Enjoei and BetSat as an art assistant, and signed four short films as art director: Maya Zahan's Zahir on the Day the World Ended (2022), The Tragedy of the War King (2023), and the musical Garotos do Espaço (2024). In 2024, Laura had the chance to direct and edit the video clip for Dom Bosco S.A by the band Chococorn and The Sugarcanes.

Laura now looks forward to be an inspiration to young girls who just like she once was, are in love with horror films, and wants to pursue this filmmaker career.

Director Statement

Cherry in Top grew up with me. I wrote it when I was 19, in the midst of an existential crisis about growing up and how things wouldn't be the same when I turned 20. The following year, I shot the film, and now I'm 21 releasing it. I realize that it wasn't just me that Cherry on Top was present during times of important change. I was lucky enough that even before the film was finished, it reached thousands of people who already wanted to know more about it. This story that at first shows us colorful girls, cakes and rabbits, but beneath all this sweetness, there is a thick layer of blood, gore, social issues and that, with fear, I hope will make people want to change their eating habits, their worldview, that it brings hunger to see more of Brazilian national cinema, and that it shows girls who always thought they were strange from others that now they can belong to our very pink and free Girl Scout camp, the Cherry on the Cake.
