Mariano Wainsztein is a New York-based filmmaker, musician, and professor at Hunter College, City University of New York.
His documentary The Animal in You, a midlife biography of renown countertenor Andreas Scholl, won an award from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.
He edited and co-directed Video Reports from Oaxaca, with acclaimed filmmaker Tami Gold. The two-part award-winning documentary tells the story of a popular uprising and the creation of a popular indigenous movement in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Mariano Wainsztein is also the recipient of the Franklin Furnace Archive award.
"Chaya", Hebrew for "Alive" and for "Animal", as well as a common female name, is an autobiographical and hyperbolic introspection inspired by the one-hundred days of pandemic lockdown in NYC. The non-collaborative production is a one-man show and a method to cope with and reflect on isolation, abandonment, and calamity.
