Experiencing Interruptions?

Chapters on False Descent

Chapters on False Descent explores narratives untethered from a coherent plot. Three sequences - a virtual trip to the sewers on the lower screen, and the deconstruction of a out-of-tune piano and a restless, aimless runaway on the upper one - represent the search for meaning in marginal spaces. The work focuses on the impossibility of fully comprehending the image and the experience of going beyond the surface of things, deep underground, reflecting on the incongruity, fragmentariness and consequent frustration of the creative process.

Director Biography

ȺLL STAGES (1998) is a multimedia artist working with painting, video and music. Born and raised in Eastern Europe, Stages began her artistic education in Italy (Milan, Brera Academy) and then continued her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where she currently lives and works. In her research she deals with the deconstruction of the visual and sonic narratives through the obscurity and the confusion of the meaning, the untold, and the exploration of marginal spaces. The so-called "anti-narratives" always carry a strong sentimental charge, but the trust of the viewer earned through harmonious and contemplative images gets soon betrayed by a constantly detoured meaning of things.

Director Statement

Images, sounds, words, actions and stage props communicate at a distance, and all we hear are echoes. Fragments of what they say build an incomplete narrative, leaving us with nothing but a feeling. Each work holds the imprint of an intimate story, that has been shattered by time and memory, eradicated from its context, and therefore offered as a formless sceneraio with burned edges, wholes, ashes and an untraceable meaning. Everything is an attempt to give form to the lost in the fog, to the invisible and the unspeakable, to the failed and to the fallen into darkness.
