Chapter 21

"Chapter 21" is a powerful experimental dance documentary that captures a pivotal chapter in the life of Indigenous dance artist, performer, and mother, Starr Muranko. The film follows Starr in the lead-up to the premiere of a deeply personal performance, exploring the intimate intersection of her cultural identity, artistic journey, and the challenges of facing unexpected and life-altering events.

The film is a meditation on the power of resilience, transformation, and healing through the body, as Starr navigates the emotional and spiritual landscape of these challenges.

Chapter 21 is a celebration of the sacred act of creating in the face of adversity.

Director Biography - Sophia Mai Wolfe

Sophia Mai Wolfe (she/her/hers), is a queer, mixed race, Canadian-Japanese independent artist whose practice is ever-changing. Her practice moves and connects her to live performance, video documentation, curation, festival programming, editing, filmmaking, and directing. Her dance practice has led her to performing and touring internationally with companies and independent choreographers.

She holds an MA in Screendance with Distinction (2022) from the London Contemporary Dance School, and is the founding Artistic Director of F-O-R-M (Festival Of Recorded Movement), (www.f-o-r-m.ca), a youth and emerging artist focused film festival which screens and commissions films that center the body in motion.

Through completing her MA, she became interested in making work that challenges and slows our attention. She uses film and dance to invite connection and empathy towards the bodies we witness on screen, as well as invite sensation and within the bodies of those witnessing. She works independently and collaboratively with artists and communities to engage audiences in work that moves them through embodied and imaginative experiences.
