Satyagraha in Champaran 1917
Mahatma Gandhi led the Champaran Satyagraha in 1917 against the Britishers who were forcing the poor farmers of Champaran to grow indigo on the land that was leased to them and were not paying them the money which was owed to farmers. Due to this the farmers lived in extreme poverty. Gandhiji not only fought for the farmers against this cruel practice but also worked to socially uplift the farmers. He did this by not only educating them in the importance of cleanliness, teaching them to be self sufficient but also providing them with basic medical services.
