Chabiwala - The Keysmith
'Chabiwala' opens with Bhaben, 30s, a benevolent keysmith, offering the key to his heart, 'sohag chabi', to his beloved Fatima, 21, village headman's daughter. Her father sees their secret romance as sheer blasphemy. Not only Bhaben belongs to a different faith, but also is no match in terms of Fatimas' status quo. Hence, down the lane, the dearest gets hitched to someone ticking the boxes, afar in the city, which leaves Bhaben to a seemingly impossible dream to come up to the city making keys and find Fatima in the haystack of concrete.
En route, Bhaben meets Amlan, 59, a celebrated writer, baffled in the non-creative limbo, remains goggled to a hideous past and its consequences. Amlan asks Bhaben to make a key for a drawer where he keeps his sleeping pills and continues to lose it. Meanwhile, Fatima oscillates between rummaging the truth of a woman being raped by her husband and saving him from the alleged sin. Unknowingly, she recruits Zaira as a lawyer for the case, who happens to be Amlan's wife. Zaira has stopped looking for Amlan confining himself to a self inflicted exile.
How very obscure that all these characters are locked in a thread of intertwined labyrinth hoping for a key. So is Bhaben's animated friend Bhukharam, posing abstract aids or be it Nagen, a prey to his starving son, gives in to risky easy money.
The film unfurls in the hope of these long lost lovers ever chancing upon each other in this odd colossal city. Well, the answer is eventually left to the key of destiny.

Indian Panoroma, official selection
Raja Ghosh, 37, is an Indian independent filmmaker. After completing his masters in commerce, Ghosh started working with an IT farm, but its superfluous landscape couldn't come in terms with his artistic self. He then left the job to indulge his yearslong interest in becoming a filmmaker.
Since, he has collaborated with several short films and documentaries. Ghosh has directed a short named 'Uraan', which is available for watching at the most popular regional ott platform hoichoi. 'Chabiwala', his debut feature is paving its way into the festivals across globe.
Being a documentarian, strolling aimlessly about my city, I happened upon a dejected keysmith who regularly travels up to Calcutta to find someone he lost long back to the crowd.
I've always been fascinated by the idiosyncrasies of outcasts, their mirth, vulnerabilities, heartbreaks. As the ecosystem has already forsaken and forbidden 70% of the marginalised individuals as wastes, I feel I can echo their cries and whispers. Bhaben is one tight smack on the face of our congregated callousness towards the lot. His indifference to become rich subjugates the agencies of rat race and his indisputable love for Fatima the futile communal differences.
'Chabiwala' not only weaves a narrative smeared in love and longing, but also dismisses posed hierarchy and searches for the inherent notion of truth.
