Director Statement

At the beginning of 2020, I was packed to move to São Paulo, where I would be playing in theaters in that city. It would be the first time that I would leave my hometown, Cuiabá, in the Brazilian Midwest, to enter the season in the largest city in Brazil. But the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted my plans.

Suddenly, I found myself isolated at home, alone, with my things boxed in, hoping that the pandemic would pass soon and I could continue my life, my dreams. Did not happen.

Without work and without money, I had to adapt to a cruel reality and try to survive as an artist in an overwhelming scenario. How to continue to dream?

I started recording some audios on my cell phone, based on thoughts, anxieties and observations of other artists who were trying to survive with their work on digital networks.

“Celeste” is a poetic license to talk about something very real: how are artists, specially LGBTQIA+, surviving during social isolation? The short was all produced and recorded at home and is an invitation to live in the shoes of a person who never felt like belonging to the world and now feels even more out of place. Celeste is nothingness, the cosmic dust that makes up our whole.
