My name is Kareem Almasri and I am a young passionate filmmaker. I have been making films for about three years now, and multiple of my short films in the past have gotten awards as well as local recognition. I view film as an artform, and I resort to this medium as a way of expressing myself and my thoughts. My passion for film had become evident to me ever since I was introduced to the technical aspects of filmmaking back in high school. Because I have such big aspirations for film, I try to always be on the lookout for opportunities where I can showcase my abilities and further my experience in this field.
Currently, I work with the KCFF, and more recently I have been involved in helping edit an assortment of films from the KCFF's 18mm program, which are also set to screen at this year's film festival. Additionally, I plan to continue on pursuing film in post-secondary as I am very much on track to do a medial major at Queen's University with the "Film & Media" degree being a part of my plan.
One thing that I have always admired about the arts is the way in which they create opportunities for people to express themselves. I always like to say that I make films for the sake of expressing who I am. The reason for this is because I value the implementation of authenticity in art as it is where one can observe the value of art at its purest form. In its essence, Catharsis, was my own catharsis of expressing myself through various experimental film sequences. Throughout of this project, I weaved in many different pieces of myself, and this can be inferred whether explicitly through the project's narrative or implicitly through the finer details of which I had carefully intermingled. Catharsis as a film aims to encourage people to put in the time in learning about themselves as it is only through self-discovery that one can achieve positive personal change.
