Catch Her

Catch Her
Music and Lyrics by: Sophia Beltran

Intro:
Humming

Chorus:
I would catch you
In a field of rye
Underneath
The very deep blue sky

Verse I
I travelled to New York away from
Everybody in my life
Pencey wasn’t nice to me
And I don’t like them either

Chorus:
I will catch you
In a field of rye
Underneath

The very deep blue sky

Verse 2
I stayed in a hotel
And Sunny, well, she took my dollars!
And Sally wasn’t nice to me,
And I don’t like her either.

Chorus

I will catch her
In a field of rye
Underneath
The very deep, blue sky

Bridge:
Phoebe,
Kept on going round and round
The carousel
Seeing my sweet sister just makes me so goddamn happy…

Verse 3
…In her very, very light blue coat
It’s funny how I somehow
started missing everybody
Though they weren’t nice to me
And I don’t like them either

Chorus
I will catch them in a field of rye
Underneath the very deep blue sky

Coda:
Catch her, catch her
Catch her in the rye
Catch her, catch her
Catch her in the rye
Hmmm…

Artist Biography

Sophia B (Sophia Beltran) is a high school student from the "Fame" School--Fiorello H. Laguardia Highschool. She is a vocal major belonging to a highly selective class of young musicians known as The New Music Ensemble. She began writing songs at 13. Her debut single, Boys Are So Overrated was inspired from her frustrations with the antics of middle school boys that she wrote with her friend Sofia Luce in Union Square Park. Catch Her was written as a literary response for Catch Her in the Rye by J.D. Salinger for her English Honors Class in 9th Grade. Her teacher assigned this project before the lockdown. During the lockdown, Sophia posted the song in Instagram because it was requested by peers. It gained the attention of music industry professionals and so she decided to produce it for streaming.

Artist Statement

Catch Her is a song I wrote inspired by Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. I used my personal experiences in middle school to access the meaning of the story and also to find that story in my life. It gave me the courage to forgive those who made middle school so unpleasant. I learned that by creating this song, that writing songs( or anything for that matter) can turn an awful experience into something that elevates that memory. Through this creation, I am able to connect with the thoughts of a writer long gone--someone I have never met to my life from a different time, and find something in common with him. In turn, my creation resonated with people who I have never met who connected with the words, and music that I wrote. It was my antidote to the isolation we all had to experience during the lockdown.
