Fernanda is a Mexican-born filmmaker with a passion for telling coming-of-age stories that have the themes of family, cultural identity and heritage at their core. She has created commercial and narrative work for companies like PBS, Caribu, Symphony Tacoma and more. She is also an online film instructor at a local Miami non-profit, Shine MSD, to share her love for film with the community that helped her grow.
Her last short film "Caminos" won the Audience Award for The film-maker Project and secured distribution with PBS getting her film to air nationally. She has brought her vision, wit, and sense of humor to direct and edit "Carino."
Carino is a love letter to Miami– my home away from home. With this being a romantic film we were able to take advantage of the colorful and vibrant locations in Miami and the thriving Latin and Hispanic community. The backdrop of the city also played in enhancing the story of the characters and complementing their lifestyles.
Through this film we could show how much social media plays a role in modern relationships. The social media community we surround ourselves has a great impact on our lives and emotions. We showed this visually using the saturation in scenes and VFX to show the different emotions the characters are experiencing.
I genuinely enjoyed directing the actors and helping tell the story of these spicy characters. There was a delicate balance between making the characters feel bold yet authentic. We were really able to catch the flavor of Miami with their wardrobe, interactions, and dialogue. The music from merging artists from Spain and Latin America added to make the story what it is.
We made this with love. Hope you have fun watching our love story.
