Carbon Copy
Carbon Copy is a 4 minute film inspired by a collection of self-written poems that directly comment on my intersectional experiences growing up as a Black woman living in modern Britain. The film navigates between sensations of trauma, desire and frustration.
I wanted to use this film as an opportunity to describe the paradox of the female Black British experience; that at one moment you are seen as a threat to British culture and the next a queen that slays.
I use poetry to describe this complexity in the Black British experience. Although I find that words cannot always describe how I view the world around me, I try to always punctuate my words with action.
Poetry has enabled me to describe some of the ruthless treatment I have received and the oppressions I face that are beyond my control.
New Creatives has offered me a platform to begin to articulate these experiences to a wider audience. It has been a moving experience to watch my poem transform and grow into the film, Carbon Copy.
This is a call to all to take action. This may mean taking an emotionally difficult route as we work towards unlearning the whispering voice of negativity that lurks within our consciousness.
I wanted to create this fim to reach out to those that are deemed as Other; to be the representation and celebration of what is deemed Other. I wanted to reach out to people that have shared the same experiences and have the confidence to say “me to”.
I feel the weight of my ancestors; I hear their wailing and their cries of confusion. The colour of my skin carries a history of oppression, and yet I still wouldn't change the colour of my skin. Us Black babies soak up the sun.

Jade Ayino is a multidisciplinary artist currently living it large in Bristol. UK
Their work explores themes of fragility within social constructs, autonomy in femininity, and the introspectiveness of intersectionality. As an artist, the aim of their work is to blur , bend and bounce the boundaries between creative disciplines, curiously finding new ways to express that so called inner light.
