can't be bothered

This film is a collaborative effort as part of the presentation of fashion graduation collection of Nelson Chio. Instead of going with the trend of high-street aesthetics, the collection went with the lifestyle of actual people. Drawing inspirations from grocery shopping behaviors of people in the market, the collection hopes to make fashion statements that relate to actual people. And to situate the collection in reality, we decided to dress models of various realistic body types in the collection, and take them out on an actual Saturday market grocery shopping.

Director Biography - Medea Zingerle, Nelson Chio

Medea Zingerle
Medea is a filmmaker who possesses a deep fascination for the captivating synergy between movement and moving images. Their creative endeavors are predominantly focused on the realm of documentaries and motion design within the commercial field.
Having grown up amidst the breathtaking grandeur of the Alps, Medea's artistic journey was ignited by the raw and unfiltered essence of their natural surroundings. The awe-inspiring peaks and untamed landscapes fostered within them a profound connection with nature, which continues to shape their unique artistic perspective.
Residing in the vibrant city of Rotterdam, Medea draws boundless inspiration from the city's bold and authentic energy. The city's dynamic atmosphere and rich cultural tapestry provide an endless source of creative stimulation for their work.
With a deft skill for merging the raw, untouched elements of nature with the unfiltered energy of the urban landscape, Medea has mastered the art of crafting narratives that deeply resonate with audiences. Their films artfully capture raw emotions, candid moments, and authentic experiences, leaving a lasting impact on viewers.
Currently pursuing a degree in Audiovisual Design at the prestigious Willem de Kooning Academy, Medea is already making significant strides in their professional journey. They have gained invaluable experience by interning and working at esteemed production houses such as movie.mento and Eyeforce. Additionally, their passion for art direction led them to work as an assistant on various projects, including the feature-length fiction film "Windstill."

Nelson Chio
Born and raised in Hong Kong, a city that never has enough living space, he has become keen to practical thinking. Coming from a family that couldn't be any more average, he has learnt to cheat the most out of the very little he has. Travelling with no money for extra luggage? No problem he would simply make a giant tote bag to carry as an accessory to his hand luggage. The typical Cantonese sarcasm has also added a different flavor to his practicality. Growing up naughty, in a decent way, he simply wants to give everything a plot twist.

His passion for practicality has driven him to often design technically. He is a self-taught pattern-maker. And because of that, the London College of Fashion thought that he couldn't be a designer but only a good pattern-maker. And to that he said, with all due respect, f you. So instead, he spent 4 years in one of the most practical countries, the Netherlands, and let all his practical thinking burst and develop into his current creative vision "can't be bothered."

Director Statement

People aspired fashion (past tense).
But people don’t understand fashion anymore (present tense).
There is a clear divide between the fashion crowd and "the rest". Since when have the fashion world and the actual world become so indifferent to each other?
Fashion does not have to be for everyone. But there ought to be a room for mutual understanding. By drawing inspirations from actual people and their everyday lives, this project hopes to bring fashion back to a generally relatable level.
No sky-high budget. No unrealistically fancy setting. We employed a raw and documentary-like approach, capturing the genuine experiences and interactions of the models grocery shopping at a bustling market.
Leaning on the attitude of critical design, we question the relevance of today's fashion trends and invite viewers to rethink on the ideology of contemporary fashion.
