Freelance filmmaker Amanda Deery is a native Floridian and has spent the last few years working as a 1st AC on various projects and prep tech at Panavision NY and Scheimpflug Camera. Amanda is passionate about pursuing work in the camera department while inspiring and increasing access for other women who are also interested in working with cameras in entertainment and film.
Before moving to New York, Amanda was a teaching assistant at the University of Florida (UF), sharing her knowledge of cameras, film sets, and more with undergraduate students. She also worked as a videographer for Media Services at the UF College of Journalism and Communications, a camera assistant at Studio 601, and has over five years of experience as a camera operator for ESPN’s live broadcasts.
In addition to her work in the camera department, Amanda has directed two short films, including Calypso (2020), which presents a satirical outlook on corporate America and heroism, and was a script supervisor on American-Ish (2021), a feature-length film that highlights womanhood as it intersects with cultural and societal expectations.
After reading the script for Calypso, written by my long-time friend and collaborator, Christopher Lee Fatt, I became consumed by his vision to render a satirical, dark-comedy that addressed mental health under capitalism. I drew a lot of inspiration from Fight Club and American Psycho when it came to the tone of the film, but also tapped into what each of the actors and crew members brought to set. We were student filmmakers at the time, and it was exciting to take on the challenge of creating a final cut that was visually unique and didn't pander to the audience while working with a very limited budget and crew. Thankfully, our professors, loved ones, and local businesses in the community rallied around our team by donating their time, spaces, and support. The six-day shoot was quite memorable, and I'm proud of what we were all able to achieve.
