Cadence

“Questa è la vita. It means whatever happens, happens.”

Alone on a foreign planet, Cadence teams up with Jax, a local bounty hunter, to secure her ticket off-world. Along their journey she discovers that her long-lost brother, the reason she moved to the planet in the first place, may finally be within reach.

Director Biography - Matt Gall

Matt Gall has been writing and directing films since getting his hands on a video camera at age eight.

Graduating in 2016, Matt received a Bachelor of Creative Arts from the University of South Queensland. During his study, he wrote and directed numerous short films in addition to a ninety page feature film script, of which he shot the first 25 pages for his third year thesis project.

His first post-study film-making endeavor was a 20 minute short titled ‘Blocked’ that he wrote and directed. ‘Blocked’ followed the journey of a writer, who whilst desperate to find material to write about, helps his date break into her ex’s home in order to retrieve a necklace that was left behind during their breakup. It won a Silver Award at the ‘Global Indie Film Fest’, screened in Italy as part of the ‘Apulia Web Fest Festival’, and received three ‘Official Selection’ titles from other Australian and International Film Festivals.

Following this, during his work for Equip Consulting, he was privileged to work on a documentary titled 'The Project Principle' covering the ugly, burnt out, stressed out side of business owners that they don't want you to see. ‘The Project Principle’ received five ‘Official Selection’ titles from International Festivals and screened in Los Angeles as a part of the ‘KAPOW Intergalactic Film Festival’.

Since January 2019 Matt has been working on a 40 min sci-fi short titled 'Cadence', which was completed in mid-2021, and is currently in Pre-Production for a 10 min short set during the 1500’s French Wars of Religion. Throughout his work Matt is driven by a passion to inspire and entertain, with his personal favourite aspect of films being the deep conversations that arise after viewing a movie that has touched your heart in a unique way.

Director Statement

January 2018: about a year before I’ll start work on this film. I’ve just ended a bad 3 year relationship, lost majority of the furniture and possessions that I owned, and have ended up sleeping on a couch in my parents garage. I’m into the post production work of my previous short film with little motivation to continue. So, I did the only sensible thing that one could do in that moment; I ignored the red flags and threw myself into a tumultuous on/off relationship.

Six months passes and I finally managed to call it quits. I could look back on that and say that I wasted my time, approached the journey incorrectly, or just gave up too early, because the end result was not the one I’d planned for when I started. But that’s not the case at all. I got to take away something far more important.

I learnt how to pick myself back up and keep moving forward.

And so I did.

I finished the post production work of my previous film. This film goes on to screen at international short film festivals.

I met another woman. We were married in 2019.

I was renewed with energy. An energy that I poured into this film.

What I’m trying to say is; life is hard and making films is even harder. You set out with one idea in mind and it likely ends up turning into something completely different that you couldn’t have anticipated. But the real strength comes from being able pick yourself up during your darkest hour and continue moving forward. I hope that I can inspire others to do the same.
