Writer Statement

‘Cullacino’ is a short film that explores the profound impact of environmental crisis on the human experience. Set in a bleak future where water scarcity has reshaped the world, the story follows a father and son as they navigate the challenges of survival in a barren landscape. Through their journey, the film delves into themes of generational responsibility, the weight of past mistakes, and the complex dynamics of family relationships.

The narrative unfolds in a world where access to water has become a luxury, prompting the father and son to embark on a quest for this essential resource. Their nomadic existence underscores the desperate reality faced by countless people as they navigate a parched earth. The film's emotional core lies in the young son's awakening to the history of his world through the discovery of a forgotten virtual reality headset. As he delves into the past, he confronts a stark truth: the world was not always like this.

The juxtaposition of the son's innocence and the harsh reality he unearths serves as a metaphor for the disconnect between generations. His realization that the world was once different challenges his belief that scarcity was the norm, forcing him to come to terms with a painful reality. The father's role in this revelation is multi-layered, reflecting his own struggle to protect his son from the grim history while carrying the burden of responsibility for the world's downfall.

‘Cullacino’ explores the tension between resignation and hope. The son's resentment towards his father mirrors the frustration of a younger generation grappling with the consequences of previous generations' actions. As the son witnesses his father's remorseful acceptance of the past, he begins to understand the complexity of the choices that shaped their present reality.

Ultimately, the film underscores the urgency of environmental consciousness and the need for collective accountability. Through its evocative narrative and poignant character dynamics, ‘Cullacino’ encourages reflection on the legacy we leave for the next generations. As viewers are immersed in this dystopian tale, they are prompted to consider the actions required to ensure a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

In crafting ‘Cullacino’ the intention was to create a thought-provoking narrative that resonates with audiences on both an emotional and intellectual level. The film challenges us to confront uncomfortable truths about the environment, responsibility, and the power of intergenerational understanding, while reminding us that even in the face of dire circumstances, the human spirit can still find a way to forge ahead.
