Corpus is a Latin word which refers to selected documents to perform a study, and I chose this name because it is related to the methodology of the artistic work that I propose, which is a synthesis of a group of videos and photos about my mother that I recorded over the years, or by my sisters, In addition to the first pictures I took with my father's camera in the mid-nineties.
And while I'm recording videos or photos just to document our family memory, I've discovered a story worth sharing about my mom's journey in life before we were born.
My mother got married twice, once when she was a child and once when she was a minor who had not yet reached puberty (that is, without showing the important signs of puberty, the most important of which was menstrual blood), she was one of the first girls in the village to enroll in school in 1968, but her dream soon evaporated after the school collapsed as a result of a natural disaster. A woman with her beliefs, rituals, and imagination full of ancient representations of existence, the forces of nature, and rites of passage. Women in the Amazigh culture are an essential reservoir for the collective memory and mentality of the tribe.
In the year 2022, I decided that my following work on my mother would be a triple video installation in which I would be exposed to the phenomenon of forced underage marriage in the rural areas and its impact on their psychological and physical life through my mother’s experience, so I recorded a lengthy dialogue with my mother about her life, thoughts and beliefs, then I chose the photos and videos that I will use abstractly and experimentally in the three videos.
The work will be a triptych film installation attached to an exhibition of collage images, in addition to presenting my mother's things of emotional and historical significance to her.
The three videos have three titles: "TEMPUS, ETHOS, LOGOS" and each one deals with a specific topic related my mother.
TEMPUS carries the question that started this whole journey which lit the candle of curiosity about my mother especially since 1989 exactly the day of an incredible storm where I witnessed her reaction to it.
ETHOS tells about my mother’s existential path, her marriage as a child and as a minor twice, her aborted dream while studying, and her view now of her life and the lives of her daughters, especially Amal, who is 28 years old and refuses marriage and aspires to financial independence first before any engagement.
LOGOS is an anti-theme video It carries the perceptions of my sister, Amal, who is looking for independence and defying social pressures as a young woman who has approached thirty years of age without being married, according to the prevailing social norm in society.
As for Projecting and its outputs, in addition to participating in biennials and exhibitions of contemporary arts and cultural meetings, I want to tour students dorms of the village student in several regions of Morocco (ten performances in ten of the students dorms) in order to bring contemporary art closer to the girls villages and create a space for communication and advocacy around the issues of early marriage and school dropout from which girls of villages in Morocco suffers today (more than 13 thousand marriage licenses for a minor in 2022), to conclude the project with an advocacy booklet that includes the testimonies and demands of the village girls that we will meet during the tour, in addition to a guide on how to deal with the family archives and re-consider the private or small memory or heritage, through the experience of this project.
