COMPENDIUM OF PERPLEXITIES
COMPENDIUM OF PERPLEXITIES, 2011 (7 minutes) Composed of many threads. No fixed narrative, nor explanations. At the core: a group of individuals in search of something, sometimes tormented and sometimes detached. One individual continuously jumps off a balcony, but somehow at the last moment she's restrained from falling. In another group, there’s the throwing of the dice as a game of fortune to determine a future. In Shanghai, a man digs a ditch to eternity. Someone walks down the street and never looks back. Two men pass back and forth an unconscious woman – seemingly ritualistic and arbitrary. These dream-like sequences unfold in grainy black and white, suggesting animation. A hypnotic soundtrack generates alpha waves in the viewer.

I have written four published collections of fairytales. I’ve also exhibited paintings, photographs, and installations around the world in museums, galleries and Biennales. Besides many shorts, I have written and directed two feature length “artist films”: Hallucinations/Paradise, 2010 and Mirror of Happiness, 2022. I received a BA in Film /Television at San Francisco State University, and a MFA from the University of New Mexico.
My films celebrate the sensibilities of such writers as Gertrude Stein and the stream of consciousness narratives of James Joyce. My films also continue in the footsteps of the pioneer Luis Buñuel. Recent examples of Magic Realism would include “The Lobster” by Yorgos Lanthimos, as well as the work of Brit Marling.
