ÇOHU (STAND UP)

They stand on Pristina’s main promenade – in the midst of hundreds of people. Adelina Tërshani, known as a quick-witted feminist, leads the crowd with megaphone and provocative slogans. Lendi Mustafa, leader of the LGBTI community also on site, wears a rainbow-coloured flag as a cape. Together they resist the patriarchy, which is strongly anchored in institutions, society and above all within their own four walls. Their main concern: Equal rights for all sexes in Kosovo. Although both are repeatedly confronted with verbal and physical attacks, she is committed to her activism. The strong relationships with their friends and the community give them strength and hope to continue fighting for their cause in a country that has to re-form between modernism and tradition.

Director Biography - Arzije Asani, Céline Stettler

We are Arzije Asani and Céline Stettler, both 24 years old and students at the Zurich University of Arts. As directors, we are working together on the project ÇOHU, which we are realising as part of an interdisciplinary diploma thesis. Our enthusiasm for documentary work on socially relevant topics motivated us to do this project. In summer 2019, we will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Cast Audio-visual Media (Arzije) and a bachelor’s degree in Trends & Identity (Céline). Thanks to this interdisciplinarity, we critically reflect on our decisions and work together with different perspectives, approaches and competencies.

Director Statement

Kosovo is a small, young and isolated country. The strict visa procedures make it difficult to get in and out of the country. Teenagers use the internet to access the world and to learn things they were not taught in school, such as sex education. Kosovo is home to many diverse talents, however due to political and economic reasons, there is little international recognition.
Feminist activist Adelina and LGBTIQ activist Lendi have decided to stay in this country despite the lack of prospects. We were inspired to give these young people a platform to be heard internationally. We want to raise awareness of their ideas, their drive and their success to as many people as possible.
