Cheng-Chui Kuo was born in Taipei (Taiwan), and studied cinema in Provence University in France. His short film Family Viewing won Audience’s Choice Award in Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival and nominated as Best Short Film in Cesar Awards in France. His first feature film Forêt Debussy was in official selection in Beijing International Film Festival, Hawaï Golden OrchidAward and Macao International Film Festival. Clément, Alex et tous les autres is his first feature in French.
Originally, Clément, Alex et tous les autres is a theatrical play that I wrote and set on 2006. It was played in a tiny Parisian theater for 5 weeks and had quite a great success. I’ve always wanted to adapt the play on a movie, but I’ve started, as every new director, to work on short films. After directing my first feature film Forêt Debussy in Taiwan, it was time for me to work on this personal project. I choose to self-produce the film to keep every inch of free speech. The main characters are gay and lesbian, the project has, possibly, shocked some individuals during presentations and discussions over the LGBTQ representations field. I didn’t actually wanted to re-write the script to make it more consensual or appealing. Furthermore, the crossing point between financial structures is very long and I really felt the urge to make this film. I think it is almost a militant act, I wanted to show that it is also possible to make cinema without any conventional resources. Everything is possible as far as the story is fair and we work hard for it.Clément, Alex et tous les autres is a film with an actual subject. It is about us, about our society, of our love for life but also about our loneliness without any censorship. The film doesn’t deal only with homosexuality, it has a universal story since it speaks about our sensitiveness. This sentimental comedy is going to make the audience laugh, actually a lot ; it will also without doubt, make them cry because we are all sensitive to love, without any gender questioning. Clément, Alex, Anne, David, Maeva and Leo, those six characters are like you and me, prey of singular and deep feelings. The actor’s selection, more or less known, was very important for this film. It is a huge opportunity to discover promising young actors that might one day be a must-have of tomorrow’s French films. The fact of not being submitted to any “decision-makers” pressure and being a self-produced film allows you to confide roles freely to actors that are not so well known by a large audience. As regards of experienced actors who accepted to play into this film without budget, they take a consequent artistic risk.Sincerity is not enough to make a film. It is a must to be surrounded with devoted professionals. The subject of this film is quite softer than for my previous films, but the production and manufacturing are strongly supervised. The final product must reach the high expectations of our hopes and our implication for making it amenable into festivals and theatrical distribution. I want to show that cinema can also exist with limited economical investments and propose an entertaining professional film.
