CIRCLES
Bohubritta / Circles, is an experimental and well thought out short film by Utpal Datta. It brings on to screen the poetry of Swapna Dutta Deka, who also provides the voice over by reciting the poem herself, using all the traditional cinematic idioms with subtle effect.
The narrative, aided by fluid editing and vivid cinematography, is a film that captures the eyes of the viewer immediately. Director Utpal Datta, with his flawless direction, and out of the box use of visuals, brings to fore the richness of the poetry, and, in turn, makes Bohubritta a beautiful cinematic experiment.
Blending the heritage and traditional worship of Tree and River, so unique to the North Eastern State, the film, is a fictionalised and imaginary rendition of the practice and takes the viewer from the tradition to the modern, being rendered in two parts.
The film brings on to the screen in vibrant, vivid manner Assam’s rich tradition and heritage of Tree and River worship. Director Datta cleverly blends the tradition with the modern through his deft direction melding both the elements in a seamless fashion providing for an esoteric experience.
The richness and beauty of the short film Bohubritta lies in its colourful tapestry of visual forms and cinematic craft and idiom so sensitively etched through some fine editing and equally imaginative cinematography which are rich in its verdant visuals.
The script has been very imaginatively worked upon ensuring that within the short time span the symbolic nuggets and nuances of the poet’s words are captured and conveyed without any loss of their inner meanings and symbolism.
Bohubritta, a poem in film, is a unique experience and experiment, and is a bold attempt by the director, with deep understanding of cinematic idioms and craft, seen in each frame so meticulously pictured, blended and brought out.
