CIFIKA - Good Luck From Her (Lusine Remix, Live)
Music video collaboration from Seoul based electronic artist CIFIKA and Seattle's Lusine.
Streaks of experimental electronics and live drums blend with vocals sung in korean and english.
Cifika's lyrics in the song are about borrowing strength from a future self she sees as realized and strong, because her present self is down - "I want to borrow good luck from her, I just want it to burst on my heart / I have so far to go but I keep breaking down, would you give me your good luck just once / would you please carry me just once."
Two cities merge - Lusine in Seattle, and CIFIKA in Seoul.
The video carries the layering forward through a series of double exposures. Cities are interfaced with the natural world. Snakes ingest skylines. A roving eye hovers, roams, and surveys.
Lusine (Jeff McIlwain) and CIFIKA (Yousun Cho) originally worked together for a track on Lusine’s 2019 'Retrace EP' released on Ghostly International.
The pairing led to Lusine remixing the CIFIKA song “Good Luck From Her” which never got released.
This video is for a live version of the remix featuring a drummer.
McIlwain says, “I really loved CIFIKA's original track for “Good Luck From Her,” and her beautiful vocal work. I thought I could come at it from a different angle, breaking up the verse and chorus into totally different, more abstract sections. The verse just seemed to want to build and build in my head, and I like the weird way it turned out. I played it out live a few times, usually with Trent Moorman on drums. This is a recording of the live version."

“I liked the original version and the remix of "Good Luck From Her" so much I listened to them all the time, and over the past year I started compiling video footage to go with the sounds. Then I visited snakes at a reptile sanctuary outside Seattle, and began double exposing video of the snakes with the city scenes.
Water in dreams can be emotion, so there's lots of water. And the world's upside down. I added drums, percussion, and keys at the Recovery Room Studio in Seattle.”
